Down in the West Texas Town of El Paso

I wanted to slap someone from American Airlines. Not quite how the song goes, but you get the idea. I am sitting in the El Paso airport for a lot longer than planned. My flight to Chicago was delayed, and I wouldn't be able to make my connection to Indy. So, they are routing me through Dallas on a later flight. Instead of arriving at the original 8:30 pm, I will now be arriving at 10:50 pm. After I get my bags, car out of parking, and drive home, I should be able to get to bed around 12:30 am. Needless to say, tomorrow is going to suck. Tomorrow is also the first day of my fall semester, so with all this, you can imagine I am slightly less than thrilled. I told everyone before I arrived at the airport that something would go wrong, since I was able to arrive in El Paso with my bags and without a delay.

I was about to say that El Paso isn't as much "west Texas" as it is "north Chihuahua," but then realized that El Paso isn't nearly nice enough for Mexico.

So what't the deal with American Airlines, now? I understand a delayed flight is frustrating, but it's not uncommon for it not to be the fault of the airline itself. More information, por favor...err, please?

P.S. The Blogger comment entry doesn't support <s>? Weak.

American regularly screws up the flight from IND to ELP. Depending on which way you are going, the flight is usually somewhere between 50 and 70% on time. I am not sure what the details are on why my flight got delayed, but what I do know is that the other airlines were all on time and mine weren't. The reason I have continued to fly with AA is because I have racked up a ton if airline miles with them. I have enough for a milesAAver ( not a typo) Peak coach flight to Europe, and almost enough for business class.

I dunno. Seems like 70% on-time is about industry average. Some routes are going to do better (70%-90%) and some are going to do worse (50%-70%).

None of the airlines have solved this problem system-wide, and you can be sure that if they could, they would. This would be a huge competitive advantage in an extremely cutthroat business.

Ultimately, it's your decision to continue to fly with them. I could understand being upset with them if they had locked your miles until you completed a few more flights--but as far as I know, that's not the case. Cash in what you've got and switch airlines.

Or better yet, just start another mileage account.

I could buy the extra miles I need to get to Europe for free, but i need just enough to where its not cost effective to do so. I realize that 50-70% isnt uncommon, but that doesnt reflect the amount of delay. 20 minutes late is one thing, 3 hours is another.

You haven't yet explained why the flight was delayed. Did you they tell?
