Its My Birthday And I'll Grill If I Want To
The Brits are not like us. At all. The fact that they have big hardware stores that would rival some of the smaller Home Depots and Lowes are deceptive. Despite the size, they have nothing in there that you want. When we had about a foot of snow, they didn't have any snow shovels (and said they hadn't stocked them for years, despite a similar snowstorm last year).
Today, I went by looking for a disposable charcoal grill, which I had seen there during the summer. They didn't have any grills in, and at first didn't even think they had charcoal, but I found some. Apparently grilling to Brits is "seasonal." If there are 15 feet of snow outside you can be sure that there are people out there firing up the grill in it. I bought these two very expensive, very thick steaks to make for my birthday, and I wanted to grill them. So, this left me to my own devices to make a charcoal grill.
So if you ever find yourself in England (or somewhere similar), or out of money, and need to make a grill, here is what do.
1) Purchase two small clay flower pots (about 12-14 inches across the top, not painted or anything), clay plates, along with sand (unless you live somewhere with dirt), and charcoal. Better make sure you have some fire lighters, strong booze, or something similar to light the coals, because whatever charcoal you get, it wont be Kingsford.
2) Place a clay pot on the plate and fill half way with sand.
4) Steal the rack out of your oven (or in a pinch, use a rake) and place on grill.
5) Your home made grill is now ready to light and use.
2 Comments:
1. Happy birthday.
2. Wear gloves when you remove that lid.

Thanks and yeah, I used oven mits to remove the lid. The steaks were amazing, I'll post pictures later.
