Old Man Pub

Last night around 10 I decided to walk down to the pub in my neighborhood, the Model T. Well, that was a mistake. I didn't end up leaving until around 1:30, and I am pretty sure the bar closed at 12. It was an old man pub. And, the bar owner and some resident who probably has his bar stool named after him found out I was American and wanted to talk. Well, they were both drunk and as the night went on, became more drunk. They each told me the same stories about 10 times, and continued to tell them in sequence until I left. I never really got a word in, and I really wanted to say was "hey I need to get home." The stories were, in order, World War 2, their trips to the US (New York and Pittsburgh), whats wrong with England, and the charities they support, and "the trophy." I really don't know how (it wasn't part of the story any of the times I heard it), but this little corner bar possesses the original World Cup trophy from 1909, as well as the Captain's cup and a medal from the game. The old timers really wanted me to put the medal on, hold the trophy and the medal, and get my picture taken. Of course, no one had a camera and I really didn't feel like playing dress up. Its not like it was a helmet in a museum (see below). Anyway, at about 1:30 I finally got a word in and was able to leave. I got maybe 50 yards from the pub and the guy who was in there yelled at me from the door, I stopped, he staggered over, and started telling the same stories again! I was able to walk to the corner with him while he talked and then parted ways, at which point I speed walked home and went to bed. So yeah, unless you have time and patience, avoid the old man bars. here is a pic of the trophy (from the internet).

This kindof happened to me yesterday at a tiny dive bar in the middle of BFE, WA.

The "old man" was a crazy old Dutch dude who went on and on about Antarctica and racism.

I cut him off halfway through a story about some Mexicans and Italians in San Diego in the 1960s.
