For Your Consideration

I present the 1999 BMW Z3 M Coupe, complete 240 horse S52 motor and a love-it-or-hate-it hatch. Originally, I hated it. Now, not so much, and the more I stare at it, the more I like it. This one, shown here, was fortunate enough to be built with a solid black interior, and not the body matched option. I like this one a lot more than a Z3 Roadster, because it will be more functional in the Indiana winter, and a more enjoyable ride on long freeway trips. Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to drive it. This particular one is in Florida, and for $350, I can have it transferred to the CarMax in Louisville.

I did, however, test drive a 2003 Mustang Mach 1 on Saturday. I was not impressed. The interior is exactly the same as my '94 GT was and it has the same chassis so it mirrors the handling characteristics as well. It would be as if I took my '94, someone changed the body, put an extra 120 hp in it, and tried to sell it back for $12,000 more. They had a Z3 2.8 sitting next to it, and the second I sat down I immediately could tell the difference in fit, feel, and just liked it a lot more. The gaps between the panels was much closer, the quality of materials was higher, and I just overall enjoyed it much more. There is a 2000 Z3 M in Cincinnati with the aforementioned body matched interior that they want a lot more $$ for, so I may go test drive it to get a feel for the car.

For shitzngiggles, here's a pic of the Mustang I took today.

Beware the short gearing on all of the 3- derivatives.

Other than that, the M Coupe is a wonderfully iconic and stupidly penned car with asphalt in its arteries. The engineers at BMW pinned the bean-counters to the wall when they built that one, and it shows.

If you buy one, do a donut for me. Idiotic investments should at least be entertaining.

Idiotic investment? Well, I guess when you compare it to putting the money in mutual funds or something, sure, but as far as a modern sports car goes, I think its a good buy. On a similar note, its roughly an extra $7-10k for an M with the S54 engine. That seems like a lot more money for the same car with a power boost.

Counterintuitively, I think the S54-powered M is a better deal than the S52 variety. Crank bearings aside, the S54 is a much better engine and carries enough desirability that I think you're going to eat far less depreciation with one.

I am pretty sure that Carrera GT's have a lot lower depreciation than an S52 M Coupe, but they are also more than I would like to spend. I dont know if I want to spend an extra $10k for the sake of a car holding its value $5-7k better than the alternative. Granted, I would love to have the extra power, but I am willing to take the money saved, and add some Dinan parts to not only get closer to that level of performance, but also increase fuel economy.
