This past week I have been interviewing for a new job at
Cummins, and short of a brief introduction to my co-worker, I will get the offer. The job title is Power Cylinder Development for the Light Duty Diesel engine. This engine will be used in 1/2 ton trucks and
SUVs for Chrysler, amongst other applications. It is an entirely new engine, from the ground up, and much of the development is still in the works. My job is the engineering of the crankshaft, connecting rods,
flexplate, and damper. I will have support from the design engineers who do the pro-e and drafting, and the test engineers who do much of the validation, but the actual engineering through tech reports, tech profiles, etc. is all mine. The person I will be working with will be over the piston and ring design, and our supervisor is pulling double duty with both the Power Cylinder and the mechanical development group, so he is more or less working on bringing all the groups together. From the way it sounds, these are MY components. I am thrilled. This diesel engine will be one of the first to go into an American 1/2 ton truck or SUV, a completely new market for diesels. Getting in on the base design of the major components of a new engine like this is incredible. I am going to be able to move over into the position around the beginning of July, as I have to finish up work that I have going in my current position. There are still some formalities to work though, but yeah, I am pumped.
