Car Comparo

I have been re-evaluating the cars I am interested in. Pretty much, as far as BMW goes, if I don't get an M3, I am going to wish I had. If I get a 330 or 328, I am going to want to mod it to the point that it has similar specs, but even then, it is no M. Likewise with a Z3 and Boxter (non-S). So, I have begun comparing the high end models of the cars that I am interested in. Plus, I have thrown Mustang's back into the mix.

A quick word on Mustangs. I had originally sworn these off because, partly, that they are everywhere. Also, I was hoping to aim at getting a car that would run in an SCCA class other than F-Stock. However, I since realized that the level of performance that I am looking at from the Germans is comparible to the Mach 1 and Cobra lines. I will be the first to admit that the build quality, quality of materials, as well as the overall fit and finish of the Mustang cannot even compare to the Porsche and BMW. So, there will be a lot of give in take as to how much I am willing to pay for extra luxury and quality versus having a car which I can service myself and have similar performance and handling characteristics (the Cobras have an independent rear).

Anyway, where was I? Ah, I just need to get out and drive these cars and see what I like the best. On paper, the differences are small. I like the design of them all, and would probably put a blue M3 with black interior on the top of my list, followed my a blue Mach 1. In terms of styling, the Cobra is lacking, as it fails to distinguish itself from a GT or V6 Mustang.

I don't get it. You've got numbers for everything except how much you enjoy driving these cars.

Unless you're a professional race driver, I don't see why you'd buy a fast car that feels slow over a slow car that feels fast.

Thats what I was saying, I just got to get in these and see what I like and go from there.

I guess I dont get "I don't see why you'd buy a fast car that feels slow over a slow car that feels fast."

OK, gotcha. As an indicator of overall performance, charting out the numbers is a good starting point. After all, we live in a sea of vehicles and without the numbers, we'd have no way of discriminating between a Tiburon and an Evo.

My point here is that the numbers are often little more than a vague indicator--I've driven terrifyingly fast cars that feel unresponsive and vague (e.g., the last generation Camaro SS), and I've driven mundane and slow cars that feel like they're go-karts (stock-trim 1.6L Miata, Focus). The numbers would drive you toward the first category, but I can guarantee you that you'll be happier with the second.

Just ask a Camaro SS owner.

Ultimatly you probably need another column of boolean data that says, "Is this car going to be faster than Raven's Corrado?"

Remember the cobra is going to have to beat a power to weight ratio of 300hp/2800lbs - and doing so will only make you faster in a straight line.

Dan,
I agree entirely. My 94 GT was moderately fast for the age, but felt completely unresponsive. I have driven a 02 M3, and it is the ultimate driving machine. In my book it sets the bar, and I will have to drive the other cars to see if I can get the same (or close enough) feeling, to the point where I wont regret not dropping another $5-7k for the M.

Raven,
I remember someone else a few years back who was bragging about similar numbers after bolting a bottle into their SVT Contour, and still couldn’t catch a 180 HP GTI. You have got to get the power to the ground. You really should go out to El Paso and make a pass to see what your car can do now.
Secondly, are those fuel mileage numbers post-turbo?

I was trying to stick to something newer. 98 is about as old as I am looking to go.
