Computer Issues

Ok, so as you know, I had the connector issue before, which required a complete dismantling of my computer. Now, I am having an issue with it. The comp dies unexpectedly. Almost like someone was throwing a switch on it. Sometimes it acts like it doesn't want to turn back on unless it is plugged in. The fan(s) operate erratically. It seems to die if handled oddly, right now I am typing with it in my lap while laying on the couch, but before when I was attempting to sit upright on the couch, it would die about every 2 minutes. I know this is probably a Pavlovian response, but in order to get this typed, its working. Any serious ideas on what this could be?

Could be lots of things.

There are a good number of software and hardware items which could be responsible--many of these could easily be damaged by dropping the machine, jarring it suddenly, pouring PBR all over it, or even taking it apart. These things even happen during normal use, although it's admittedly somewhat less common.

There's unfortunately no diagnostic procedure for discovering what's at fault here besides replacing components one at a time. Even with your fixit job, it may still be time for a new laptop.

So, I realize that in all likelihood, it's completely your fault--but I didn't want to start the comment thread by immediately pissing in your Cheerios.

Didn't think you'd hear that one anytime soon, did ya?

I realize its probably my fault, but because its something that is touchy based on what I have done so far, I figure there is something wrong that is fixable. Looking for what it could be, ie, bad grounding, faulty wire, etc.

The route from the battery and wall outlet to the rest of the laptop systems is extremely complicated. You could have a shot power connector, have weakened a solder when you readded your connection, or have a cracked PCB. It's possible that when you fixed the connector, you bumped something that's now causing the motherboard to go into panic mode and shutdown the laptop immediately. It could also be that you broke a fan and the machine is shutting itself down to protect itself from heat damage.

If you had a schematic and an analog logger, you could possibly figure this out but it certainly wouldn't be worth the effort. As it stands, you're best off just canning the sucker and starting fresh.

I recommend the Lenovo X60.

Well, the problem is sporadic, and not bad enough to the point that I going to give up on the computer, as it still functions fine otherwise. I have been using it for several hours tonight without problem, outside of when I initially turned it on. Plus, I have LOTS of other projects that require attention (or money) over a new computer.

The computer does this when it’s unplugged as well as plugged in, so I assume its something from the power input or inward. Also, it seems to be more likely to die if I handle it, or move it around. I am leaning towards a loose connection or something of that nature.
