I Live my Life a Quarter Mile at a Time
If it takes more than 14 seconds, I am less than pleased. Actually, I am happy as can be, because I was racing, but saddened at my E.Ts. 14.3 with a 2 second 60 ft. Two problems arose.
First, the carb was out of tune. The secondaries were not opening until about 4,500 RPM, at which point the car came alive. From the 2,000 RPM launch to the opening, the car was a dog. I didn't bring any carburator components with me to the track, so I just had to live with it. This week I will be playing with different spring combinations for both the secondaries on the carb as well as springs and mechanical stops in my MSD distributor.

Second, I have an open rearend. I have wanted to remedy this problem as long as I have known that the guy who sold me the car was full of it when he said it had a Detroit Locker. My peg-leg burn out that I did will be my last. I am going to order a Powertrax Lock-Right locker, which is a bolt in piece that directly replaces spider gears, so installation does not require resetting the gear lash. It will complete my rear end, now that i have the ability to plant the weight, and will be able to get the power to the ground.
Update.
In 3 days my rearend will be slammed shut. No more slippage out back. The second my rear gets juice, its going to pound it to the ground. There, you guys happy now? Anyway, I ordered a locker today. Not the one mentioned above. I called the company that makes these, and asked how it was that they offered the same locker under the same part number for both 28 and 31 spline axles. It turns out that you don't get everything in the picture. The side gears shown are actually your existing side gears, which mesh with the spider gears in the open carrier, and may need to be replaced if worn. Well, for the price of their locker, and the price of new gears (I can pretty much assume mine are worn out) I was better off buying a traditional locking carrier. I ordered it today, I am assuming it will be here Wednesday, as it is coming from Columbus, OH, and will hopefully be able to install it and go to the Test and Tune on Thursday to give it another try.
