Mini Cube
Since I have started at Cummins, I have continually been assigned smaller and smaller cubes. In the past I have blogged about this and often referenced Milton from Office Space. The cubes in England are by far the smallest. They are similar to the ones in my previous role, in that you get 1 corner of a large "think tank" shared between 4 people, but the walls are smaller. I no longer have overhead shelving. Rather, the walls are about eye high when seated, so I always thing the Swedish guy who sits on the other side of the wall is starring at me. This probably has something to do with why our chief engineer works from home, on his ranch, in Virginia.
I have found ways to deal with it, though. Since people aren't well isolated, its noisy. I either listen to the radio on my phone or the complete discography of Metallica I have ripped onto my computer. I prefer Metallica over the radio. The radio here is all pop or techno (this should have gone in the previous post). I am pretty sure you can listen to Katy Perry or Rihanna all day long if you changed the station at the right time. It is really weird to walk out onto the assembly line and hear that playing over the radio while engines are being built. . . British. In Columbus it was mostly classic rock, stuff that is now on Guitar Hero.

I have no idea how you get anything done in an environment like that.
But I suppose that someone working in that environment would probably be wondering exactly the same thing about my work environment.

There is so much work to do, I just keep my head down and work through it. Its a matter of wanting to and needing to get stuff done. I look forward to the day that I can have 4 real walls of my own, but within Cummins that means another 2 promotions, and even then its no guarantee.
