In June I purchased a 1982 vw rabbit diesel for the purpose of commuting. New engine, trans, suspension, rack and pinion, coil overs, etc. Body is ok for age and coming from michigan. Car gets 50 mpg every tank. Break even point is 5 months compared to driving my truck, not including resale of the car, and depreciation from high miles on my truck. The paint is rolled on. Plan on giving it a make over. Stay tuned.

Are you factoring in insurance? Insurance always f's it up for me.

Yeah, just have very basic coverage on the VW so that cost is pretty minimal. Adding the stereo also added to the time to break-even, but I am pretty sure I can squeeze an extra $100 out of a potential buyer because it has it as well..
